The Toccatina was written as homage to the Mexican composer Carlos Chavez, and his famous Toccata for percussion instruments. Some rhythmic figures inspired by Mexican folklore are to be found in the present work as in its predecessor, and the instrumentation is limited intentionally to the instruments used in the Toccata.
