Canadian euphonium
soloist Kevin Thompson is dedicated to promoting the euphonium as a solo
instrument. He has performed in Canada, the USA, England, South Africa, and
Malaysia, and has recorded two solo euphonium CDs.
Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, he began playing the trumpet at the
age of ten. After a year on the trumpet, his band director asked him to play the
euphonium for the school band, and that's when he discovered his passion for
this beautiful but oft-neglected instrument. After finishing high school, he
decided to further his musical studies, and became the first person to graduate
from the University of Victoria (Canada) with a B.Mus. Degree in Euphonium
Performance. It was while at university that he added the trombone to his
already full practice schedule, and within a few years he was being offered
freelance work on that instrument.
His
first full-time performing job was with Foothills Brass, a Canadian brass
quintet based in Calgary. He played with them from 1989-1992, touring throughout
Canada and the US, and making several recordings. It was for Foothills Brass
that he also began to take brass arranging seriously; they performed and
recorded many of his arrangements, and still do to this day.
An
orchestral job opportunity came in 1992, when Kevin was offered a position with
the Cape Town Symphony in South Africa. He was in South Africa from 1992-1998,
after which he moved to Malaysia, and his present position as Trombone Section
Principal with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, in Kuala Lumpur.
Throughout
his career, Kevin has remained dedicated to promoting the euphonium, and through
his solo performances and recordings continues to share the beauty of this
wonderful instrument with people around the world.
